How the Nest lets the Blind independently control temperature inside their home

It’s the dog days of summer for sure, and the one thing I wholly depend on in the midst of this heat is my Nest. We’ve been the proud owners of a Nest device for a few years now. Our version is the first-generation, and Nest is now on their third. The reason I love our Nest is because, as a blind user, it helps me regulate the home climate control system myself. Before we had a Nest, I used to FaceTime the hubs or a friend on my iPhone and get them to help me figure out what the temperature was at inside the house. I live in Houston, so you know that summer heat is brutal. Sometimes I’d be sweating at home with the thermostat at 82°F, and I’d had no idea! Now we’ve got the Nest, and through its wifi capability, I’m able to control the central air conditioner (or heater) from not only inside my house but when I’m traveling, too. This is obviously the selling point for sighted folks, but what makes it so useful for us Blind folk is the fact that I’m able to read and control the thermostat using my iPhone’s VoiceOver—with just a quick swipe up or down, I can move my temperature down from 82°F to 77°F (yes, that’s what I keep the house at—do you think that’s still too warm?).No more burning up in the house in this Houston heat, no more wasting power when I’m out and about, and no more being solely dependent on a working pair of eyes to help me regulate my home’s temperature. We recently bought my in-laws a new Nest for Father’s Day, and they like it, too. Whether you’re sighted or not, I highly recommend the Nest to give you more control over your climate and electric bill. For those of you who already have a Nest device, what do you think of it? Considering getting a Nest? Leave me your questions and comments.
