Basque, Mediterranean, and Arabic flavors come together in a unique menu at Avec in Chicago

Our friends who frequent Chicago said their favorite local restaurant is Avec, a restaurant serving shared plates I’d describe as a conflation of Basque, Mediterranean, and Arabic. Their wine and beverage program is extensive and fantastic—we were recommended some phenomenal beers and port (in fact, it was the first place I’d ever enjoyed port).Avec doesn’t take reservations, so my advice is to go early (we went at 3:30 PM). Since we’d planned on having a second dinner right after Avec, we decided to keep it light.Among some of the most memorable dishes, we ordered the popular chorizo stuffed Medjool dates ($15) flavored with smoked bacon and peppers and topped with a tomato sauce. The whipped brandade ($14), an emulsion of salted cod and olive oil, was served with crusty garlic bread and chives. My favorite, however, was the unassuming roasted mackerel, which was an off-the-menu special that day. (And I've been on a big mackerel kick lately because of its sustainability.)Avec has unique, well-executed dishes; a thoughtfully curated beverage list; and a friendly, knowledgeable staff.
