Travel to Saigon: Trying breast milk fruit for the first time
Our first meal in Saigon was a home-cooked bowl of mi Quang, a specialty noodle dish from the Quang Nam province of central Vietnam. Mi Quang can consist of many different ingredients, but the common factors are noodles and turmeric. You can have shrimp, pork, chicken, or all of the above and then some, in your bowl of mi Quang.Dessert in Vietnam (and throughout Asia) often consists of fruit. I tried a fruit I’d never had before: vu sua, which translates into English as “breast milk” [pause for inappropriate, immature joke here], probably for its milky white texture.I love the tropical fruits of southeast Asia. There’s such a variety, and to me, being a born-and-raised American, they’re still exotic.Mi Quang is a lesser known noodle dish in the west. Have you had it before? Who makes the best? What about tropical fruits? My pops insists durian is the king of fruits. My favorite is a tie between mango and mangosteen, and second to those, perhaps lychees and longans.
